How to Become a Coded Welder in the UK

Coded welder is one of the most searched phrases in the trade and one of the least explained. Coding is not a course you sit once. It is a test you pass for a specific kind of weld, and it is what moves you from general fabrication to the better paid work.

The short version
  • Coding means passing a welder qualification test to a recognised standard.
  • BS EN ISO 9606-1 is the main standard. BS 4872 covers less critical work.
  • Each coding covers one process, material and position. Most coded welders hold several.
  • Certificates need confirming every six months to stay valid.

What is a coded welder?

A coded welder has passed a welder qualification test, also called a welder approval test, to a recognised standard. You weld a test piece under set conditions, an examiner inspects and tests it, and if it passes you get a certificate for exactly that type of weld.

The important word is exactly. A coding covers a particular process, material, thickness range and position. Pass a MIG test on mild steel plate and you are coded for that. It does not cover TIG on stainless pipe.

Which standard should you go for?

StandardUsed forGood to know
BS EN ISO 9606-1Structural steel, pressure work, pipework, most site and contract workThe one most employers mean when they say coded
BS 4872General fabrication where no welding procedure is requiredA solid first step and quicker to achieve
ASME IXPressure vessels and pipework to American codesComes up in oil, gas, power and process work

If you are not sure, look at the adverts for the jobs you want. They will name the standard and usually the position.

The route to getting coded

  1. Learn to weld properly. Through an apprenticeship, a college welding course or on the job as an improver.
  2. Pick your process. MIG (135), TIG (141) and MMA (111) are the main ones.
  3. Get the hours in. Coding tests reward consistency, and that only comes from practice.
  4. Book a test with an approved test centre, or take one through your employer.
  5. Weld the test piece. It is examined visually and then by bend tests, fracture tests or radiography, depending on the code.
  6. Receive your certificate, and keep it confirmed.
Let the job pay for it

Many employers put welders through coding tests for the work they need doing. If you are a good welder without a ticket, say so. Plenty of firms would sooner code a safe pair of hands than wait.

What the positions mean

Positions describe how the joint sits when you weld it, and they decide how much work your coding opens up.

  • Flat and horizontal positions are where most people start.
  • Vertical and overhead positions are harder and worth more.
  • 6G is a fixed pipe at 45 degrees. It covers most other positions and is the one most asked for in pipe work.

Enginuity’s 2026 review of welding job adverts found 6G certification was the most commonly preferred ticket.

How long does a welding coding last?

Under BS EN ISO 9606-1 a qualification runs for two or three years, depending on the route used to keep it valid. Whichever route applies, it has to be confirmed every six months by a supervisor or examiner signing to say you have been welding within the range of your certificate.

Miss the six-month confirmation and the coding lapses. This catches a lot of welders out between jobs, so keep your own record of when each certificate is due.

What coding does for your work and pay

Coding opens doors that are closed to uncoded welders: structural steel, pipework, pressure work and a lot of contract and shutdown work. Enginuity put the average advertised welding salary at around £38,600 in 2026, and says the UK will need at least 32% more welders by 2030 in engineering construction alone. Skilled, coded people are the ones that demand is aimed at.

How to get hired as a welder

  • Be specific on your CV: process, material, thickness, positions and standard.
  • List each coding with its date and when it was last confirmed.
  • Expect a weld test. Treat it as your interview and ask what it will be.
  • Say what you can fabricate from a drawing, not only what you can weld.
  • Consider temp or contract work to add processes and materials to your name.

Becoming a coded welder: quick answers

    What does coded welder mean?

A coded welder has passed a welder qualification test to a recognised standard, such as BS EN ISO 9606-1, for a specific process, material and position.

How long does a welding coding last?

Under BS EN ISO 9606-1 a qualification is valid for two or three years depending on the route, and must be confirmed every six months to stay valid.

What is the difference between BS EN ISO 9606 and BS 4872?

BS EN ISO 9606-1 is the main standard for structural, pressure and pipe work. BS 4872 covers general fabrication where a formal welding procedure is not required.

Do I need to be coded to get a welding job?

No. Many general fabrication roles do not need coding, and some employers will put a skilled welder through a coding test themselves.

    What is 6G welding?

6G is a test position where a pipe is fixed at 45 degrees. It is one of the hardest positions and qualifies a welder for most others.
